Paving the Way for Greener Logistics: Project Updates Presented at Lithuanian Ministry of Transport and Communications
23 June 2025
The meeting was held in a constructive and forward-looking atmosphere, underlining Lithuania’s commitment to fostering more sustainable inland waterway transport.
The road map developed in BSC, forms part of the broader initiative to green transport chains, aims to develop and demonstrate emission-free inland waterway solutions in Lithuania. Specifically, the pilot focuses on the acquisition and deployment of an electric push boat, barge, and an electric crane to enable low-emission cargo logistics along Lithuania’s inland waterways.
During the meeting, the project team highlighted several key milestones:
- Road Map Scope and Project Objectives: The Lithuanian pilot aims to demonstrate the feasibility and environmental benefits of zero-emission inland waterway transport by integrating electric-powered vessels and handling equipment into operational logistics chains.
- Funding Confirmation: The RRF (Recovery and Resilience Facility) funding contract has been successfully signed, establishing a clear financial framework and a project finish date.
- Contracting and Procurement: Major procurement steps have been completed, with contracts signed for the delivery of the electric push boat, barge, and crane. Suppliers have been selected following public procurement rules, ensuring compliance and quality.
- Project Status and Timeline: The project is currently on track, with construction and delivery phases underway. The anticipated timeline foresees all key components being delivered and tested in due course, with operational demonstrations scheduled to begin shortly thereafter.
The meeting reaffirmed the Ministry’s support for the entire inland waterway project and its role in helping Lithuania meet both national and EU climate targets. The exchange also strengthened collaboration between policymakers and project partners working towards a cleaner, more sustainable transport future.
