Lateral Entry Programme
20 June 2025
The Lateral Entry Programme is a pilot initiative designed to provide individuals transitioning into the music industry with essential sector knowledge and the opportunity to build strong professional networks. Developed by Hamburg Music, the programme offers foundational insights into the German and Hamburg-based music economy, with deep dives into key areas such as Recorded Music, Music Publishing, and Live Entertainment.
The most recent edition of the programme took place in March 2025. Across three days—19, 26, and 27 March—participants attended a tailor-made in-person course in Hamburg that introduced various career paths and core functions within the music business. A key highlight was the final day’s Speed Dating session, where participants met representatives from Hamburg’s music companies. These matchmaking conversations helped connect participants’ skillsets with real job opportunities in the industry.
The programme targets professionals from non-music sectors who hold a degree in a different field and have at least two years of work experience, but little to no professional background in the music business. Up to 15 participants were selected by Hamburg Music from a wide pool of applicants.
Feedback from participants was remarkbly positive. Many highlighted the on-site visits to local music businesses and the Speed Dating format as especially valuable for identifying career entry points and building initial contacts. 100% of respondents said they would recommend the Lateral Entry Programme to others.
Another edition of the programme is expected to take place in summer 2025.
