Estonian industry companies gathered in Tartu
21 May 2025
The Industry 5.0 – Estonian Industry conference was held for the 11th time again in mid-May. Estonian Association of Information Technology and Telecommunications (ITL) has been a co-organiser of this conference from the very beginning – this is how long we in Estonia have been talking about the need to digitise across industries in order to stay competitive and move towards ever higher added value and more sustainable production.
This year’s conference focused on:
- Innovation and AI in industry: the role of artificial intelligence and smart solutions in boosting competitiveness;
- Sustainability as a ticket to foreign markets: the importance of ESG and the role of green technologies for export success;
- Export strategies and success stories: international experiences, new market opening stories and the use of AI in sales and marketing.
ITL was present at the Expo area on the topic of sustainability reporting for industries to present the ESG Tool, a tool soon to be published.
The discussion was at the conference that the sustainable industry is also a competitive advantage. Addressing sustainability is about identifying what creates economic value in industry – what resource management really makes a difference. It was noted that while customers are not willing to pay a penny more for sustainability, operating sustainably is a key advantage when entering new markets. Awareness of managing one’s own footprint has grown considerably in Estonian companies, but often one company can only influence a tiny fraction of greenhouse gas emissions – the expectation is that suppliers will act in the same sustainable way. Competition and sustainability are not incompatible: producing less is not an argument, but producing better is. You have to do more with less.
The conference day started and ended with a morning seminar by AIRE – AI & Robotics Estonia Club – with educational presentations and networking opportunities on the way to the conference, and at the end of the day, the winner of the “Industrial Accelerator” competition – AIRE, the AI and Robotics Centre – was announced by a popular vote. AIRE, which has been recognised, helps Estonian industry to use artificial intelligence and robotics in a practical and meaningful way.
