FoodLoops Project Team Presents Food-Waste Reduction Recommendations to Gdańsk Municipality

On 15 April 2025, the FoodLoops project team met with senior representatives of the Gdańsk Municipality—among them the Managing Director for Green Gdańsk and the Deputy Mayor for Social Development and Equal Treatment—to deliver key recommendations for cutting food waste in the city’s schools. The meeting was held as part of the FoodLoops project’s mission to close bio-waste loops in schools, share project results, and empower target groups—including school administrations—to improve biowaste separation at source and establish closed-loop food systems across Gdańsk schools.

The session also brought together the director of Gdańsk’s Public Procurement Office and officials from the Gdańsk Health and Addiction Prevention Centre and the Gdańsk Shared Services Centre. Over the course of the meeting, the FoodLoops experts:

Showcased project-driven insights into the root causes and barriers of food waste across the municipal school network

Discussed current challenges faced by Gdańsk in implementing effective waste-prevention measures

Shared successful practices piloted within the FoodLoops initiative, demonstrating real-world impact

Key Recommendations for Gdańsk Schools

1. Strengthen Nutrition Education

– Roll out enhanced curricula on healthy eating and sustainability for both students and teaching staff.

2. Mandatory Staff Training

– Institute compulsory courses for intendants and kitchen personnel on waste-minimization techniques.

3. Implement Composting Protocols

– Adopt and scale a composting script rigorously tested in FoodLoops pilot schools.

4. Establish a Certification System

– Launch a “Sustainability & Health Promotion” accreditation for schools that meet stringent food-waste reduction standards.

Through these targeted measures, Gdańsk aims to build on FoodLoops’ proven best practices—empowering school communities to embrace a circular approach to food management and setting a model for municipalities across Europe.
