In a proactive step toward tackling food waste in educational institutions, the Lithuanian Consumer Institute hosted a workshop titled “Food Waste Sorting and Education in Schools”. The event aimed to raise awareness, share best practices, and encourage collaboration on environmental education within school systems.

The workshop welcomed 20 participants from diverse backgrounds, including representatives of school administrations, municipal authorities from Panevėžys and Vilnius, catering service providers, the Ministry of Environment, and the State Food and Veterinary Service.

The agenda focused on two key areas:

  • Understanding the scale of food waste in schools and the importance of sorting practices

  • Exploring practical methods for improving food waste sorting and engaging students in sustainable habits

A recurring theme during the discussions was the rising interest in composting programs at schools. While enthusiasm is growing, participants also voiced concerns about the safety and suitability of composting certain kitchen food waste. In response, the Ministry of Environment and the State Food and Veterinary Service committed to developing clear guidelines for safe and responsible composting in educational settings.

This initiative marks a significant step forward in promoting environmental awareness and sustainability among students, educators, and public institutions through actionable and cooperative efforts.
