On March 13-14, seven teams gathered to find the most optimal and efficient ways to valorize hemp fibers, dust, and hurd obtained during the decortication of hemp stalks. The international BioBoosters hackathon, titled “HempHack: Innovate to Elevate," was organized by the Centre of Bioeconomy and Nordic Hemp Cooperation at the Estonian University of Life Sciences.

The winning team, Revoltech from Germany, presented an innovative solution for transforming hemp fibers and dust into a high-quality, plastic-free, biodegradable, and animal-free leather alternative. This solution leverages their patented LOVR material, which can be utilized in the fashion, interior design, and automotive industries. The hackathon featured 15 international mentors who provided valuable guidance to all teams.

The seven solutions came from Estonia, Germany, Sweden, Canada, Lithuania, and Finland, and support the circular bioeconomy by reusing and recycling all parts of the hemp plant, aligning with Europe’s sustainability goals. The need for new, creative approaches has never been more critical to fully harness the potential of this versatile crop.

Katrin Kepp, one of the main organizers and jury members, and head of the Centre of Bioeconomy, emphasized the university’s ambition to be a national hub for innovative circular bioeconomic solutions. “Our goal with the BioBoosters hackathon model is to lead the way in developing sustainable practices that not only benefit the environment but also drive economic growth through the efficient and sustainable use of natural resources,” she said.

According to Nordic Hemp CEO Ardi Oja, the BioBoosters hackathon is focused on sustainability, which is exactly what they are looking for. In his opinion, all companies involved in biotechnology or producing bioproducts benefit most from working with universities. Ardi stated that this hackathon opened their eyes. There are many solution providers who think out of the box, and this is of great value to Nordic Hemp because it allows them to see things differently.

HempHack was funded by Interreg Baltic Sea Region and is part of the BioBoosters project.
