On January 31, 2025, Latvia’s national television channel TV3 featured a segment on its morning show “900 Seconds” about ongoing laboratory experiments testing gypsum’s effects on soil. The coverage was part of the GYPREG project, which explores gypsum’s role in reducing phosphorus leakage and mitigating eutrophication in aquatic ecosystems.

Experts Present Project Benefits
Representatives from the project’s Latvian partners, the Latvian Institute of Aquatic Ecology (LHEI) and the Farmers’ Parliament (FP), explained the project’s objectives and benefits. Senior Researcher Inta Dimante-Deimantoviča (LHEI) emphasized how gypsum applications can help decrease nutrient runoff and improve water quality. Meanwhile, Iveta Grudovska (FP) highlighted the benefits for farmers, particularly in identifying the most suitable soil types for gypsum amendments in Latvia.
Laboratory pot tests are currently underway on Latvia’s most common soil types to assess gypsum’s effectiveness. The project team extends its gratitude to researchers Raimonds Kasparinskis (Latvia University of Life Sciences and Technologies) and Oskars Purmalis (University of Latvia) for their expertise in guiding these experiments.
Field Trials Set to Begin in April
Looking ahead, field trials are set to begin in April on farmland in Zana parish, Latvia, to evaluate how gypsum amendments perform under real agricultural conditions.
