New Bioeconomy Solutions and Sustainable Agriculture Webinar in Kuopio

On December 11, 2024, the Savonia UAS FoodLoops project hosted an engaging webinar focused on “New Bioeconomy Solutions and Sustainable Agriculture.” This event brought together twenty-four experts from various sectors, including schools, vocational institutions, universities, agricultural associations, and the private sector, to explore sustainable agriculture practices and biowaste valorization.
The webinar commenced with an introduction to the FoodLoops project, highlighting its activities and achievements. Savonia UAS staff presented the comprehensive laboratory services available within the Bio and Circular Economy research area, setting the stage for collaborative discussions.
A key highlight was a presentation from Kekkilä, a company specializing in horticultural solutions. They discussed their innovative recycling processes for biowaste, transforming it into valuable fertilizer products for agriculture and growing media. Their emphasis on local raw materials and sustainable production methods underscored the importance of reducing transportation distances and ensuring consistent availability of resources.
The Central Union of Agricultural Producers and Forest Owners (MTK) shared insights on sustainable agricultural practices, emphasizing the dual goals of reducing environmental impact and enhancing carbon sequestration. MTK’s involvement in various bioenergy projects and initiatives, such as Farmgas 3, demonstrates their commitment to circular economy models where agricultural ‘waste’ is converted into renewable energy and valuable products.
Biopallo Technology introduced their production of organic fertilizers and soil improvers, utilizing innovative bioreactor technology to reuse peat-based growing media. Their approach aligns with the growing demand for sustainable agricultural solutions.
The Rural Profession Association highlighted its extensive experience in developing bioeconomy expertise, showcasing initiatives that enhance the skills of young entrepreneurs and foster cooperation between local producers and food services.
Servica’s procurement director discussed strategies for integrating small producers’ products into school catering, aiming to boost regional vitality and improve food security through local sourcing.
Finally, a representative from the Finnish Biocycle and Biogas Association provided a comprehensive overview of nutrient recycling, emphasizing the significant potential for recycling phosphorus and nitrogen from livestock manure. They outlined recommendations for developing quality requirements for recycled fertilizers, stressing the importance of safe and sustainable practices throughout the bio-cycle chain.
This informative webinar not only showcased innovative solutions and collaborative efforts in the field of sustainable agriculture but also reinforced the vital role of circular economy practices in shaping the future of food production. The event concluded with a shared commitment to advancing bioeconomy initiatives and fostering meaningful partnerships across sectors.
