Mid-Term Conference on Maritime Risk Management and Piloting in the Baltic Sea Region

The Mid-Term Conference of the OpenRisk II project will center on engaging national, regional, EU, and global stakeholders to gather valuable feedback, refine, and validate the risk assessment and risk management tools. Piloting workshops provide a critical opportunity for testing and collecting feedback to ensure the tools are user-friendly, practical, and optimized for real-world application. In a nutshell the tools are:  

1. A Baltic adaptation of the AISyRISK tool (https://aisyrisk.no) for shared and updated risk picture of maritime traffic in the region, and creation of a new risk assessment module on ice navigation -with potential use also beyond the Baltic, e.g. in the Arctic   
2. A regional service on vulnerability of the Baltic marine ecosystem to maritime spills   
3. Tool to evaluate risk management performance of the relevant administrations, and the quality of risk assessments, commissioned or produced. 

Key participants include end users of risk assessment and management tools, such as: 

• National, EU, and intergovernmental maritime and related authorities
• Researchers and professionals from the private sector

The conference aims to bridge stakeholder needs with project outputs, fostering collaboration and innovation in maritime risk management. 

On Day 1, the objective is to set the stage through presentations on end-user needs on national, regional, EU and international levels as well as the potential solutions the OpenRisk II project contributes to. 

Day 2 shifts focus to collaborative piloting workshops, translating the end user needs expressed on Day 1 to detailed specifications of the OpenRisk II outputs. The participants will be divided to groups according to the project’s three key components and introduced to the initial versions of the tools. These sessions will demonstrate how the tools function and how they can be applied for risk assessment and management. Depending on their interests, participants can choose to contribute to all three components or focus on just one or two.

OpenRisk II project (2023-26), co-funded by the EU Interreg BSR programme 2021-27, will provide innovative, user-centric risk management tools to support authorities to prevent maritime accidents, minimize their consequences, and improve risk management across transportation modes. The project consortium consists of Traficom (Finland, Lead Partner), Aalto University (Finland), Norwegian Coastal Administration (Norway), Gdansk University of Technology (Poland), University of Tartu (Estonia), University of Helsinki (Finland) and NDPTL Secretariat (Intergovernmental).
