Copenhagen Meeting - Pool of inspiration for liveable cities

Technical details

Following the last partner meeting in March in Gdynia, Poland, project partners gathered once again on September 5–6 in Copenhagen, often regarded as the birthplace of the liveability concept. Known for its exceptional quality of life, the Danish capital served as an inspiring setting for discussions around sustainable urban living and shared community spaces.

After project internal working sessions, the new “Liveability Talks” series was launched. The series aims to spark dialogue on creating more livable cities by showcasing the successes, challenges, and insights of cities that have pioneered innovative urban solutions. Esteemed experts, thought leaders from various disciplines, and city representatives share their experiences and visions.

Organized by the Danish Cultural Institute (DKI), the sessions delved into Copenhagen’s urban evolution, focusing particularly on the Refshaleøen district as an example of reimagining city spaces for future generations. Trevor Davies and urban planner Jan Gehl traced Copenhagen’s transformation journey. They were joined by Knud Holt Nielsen, a Copenhagen City Council member, and Claus Hovmøller Jensen, Development Director of Refshaleøens Development Company, who shared insights into the city’s ongoing evolution. Bettina Werner, co-founder of the Co-Urban Design Collective, rounded off the event by discussing gentrification and a feminist perspective on urban development. Together with partners from the Liveability project, they explored Copenhagen’s approach to liveability and considered what could be applied to partner cities across the Baltic Sea region.

A key takeaway from the meeting was that while Copenhagen’s success offers valuable lessons, the city’s achievements are deeply rooted in its unique local context, shaped by specific decisions, environments, and community involvement.

Following a successful launch in Copenhagen, the “Liveability Talks” will continue monthly online. Kicking off on November 7, the next session will feature Charles Landry.
