FoodLoops tackling school food leftover at Waste Week
At the start of the national Waste Week in Finland, on 23rd September 2024, FoodLoops project organised with the SISU (Implementing Organized Climate Work in North Savo) Superpower from School Lunch workshop online. More than fifty participants represented schools, municipalities, school catering services and waste management companies. In addition to those registered in the event, pupil classes were involved under the leadership of the teacher.
Two experts introduced the participants to the topic. Miira Lepistö from the school lunch catering company Servica told us about food waste from the point of view of climate, and Henna Lehikoinen from Savonia UAS and NUTRIFOOD project focused on updated nutritional recommendations and measures of diet quality.
The workshop was divided into three themes with panelists representing pupils, teachers and catering companies. The topics were how to increase the attractiveness of school food, how to eat while listening to your body and how to enhance the consumption of vegetarian food. Each theme was initiated by a short introduction: Säde Rytkönen from the Wellbeing Services County presented results of the school health survey on middle school children’s eating. Eliisa Girsén from Siilinjärvi Municipality concentrated also on health and wellbeing questions and Ulla Santti from Savonia UAS offered on insight to pupils’ views on vegetarian food based on the results of the questionnaire carried out by the FoodLoops project.
Based on the feedback, there is a need for events and activities focused on school food waste. As a follow-up, project will elaborate topics further and plan and organize next workshops addressing food value chain.
