A short briefing about the two current (MUNIMAP) and planned (MUNIRISK) submerged munitions projects was given at the CBSS 5th Committee of Senior Officials meeting under the Finnish Presidency in Helsinki on 20-21 May 2024.  Paula Vanninen of MUNIMAP partner VERIFIN of University of Helsinki was present and gave CSO a general info on submerged munitions, which was a great awareness raising opportunity together with CBSS DG’s report.
The CBSS is engaged as a communication and policy dialogue partner in projects.

The overarching goals of MUNI-RISK, through enhanced collaboration, are twofold: 1) to prioritize areas of greatest environmental concern for remediation across the entire Baltic Sea, and 2) to address site-specific environmental risk assessment needs in areas where infrastructures are under consideration. MUNI-RISK will compile public and restricted data from the Baltic Sea States into a common database. The project will identify and fill data gaps, promote a scientific, risk-based approach to managing submerged munitions, and prioritize areas of significant environmental concern in the Baltic Sea. By doing so, the project will enhance the capacity of public and private entities and provide methodology for the incorporation of munitions into Environmental Impact Assessments. MUNI-RISK will disseminate its resulting framework for dealing with submerged munitions to relevant national and international actors, develop policy briefings for decision-makers, and ensure that the results are transferable to other seas, i.e. Black Sea.
