Baltic Sustainable Boating 2030 - Making leisure boating in the Baltic Sea fit for the post-pandemic boating tourism market
BaltSusBoating 2030

Brand development and marketing plan for the Baltic Sea Boating

06 September 2024
Technical details

The Baltic Sea region is rich with its life at sea culture, maritime facilities, providing excellent infrastructure for yachting and boating leisure activities. More than 1.000 leisure boat harbours of different size and a unique set of varied sub- destinations (e.g. Swedish and Finnish archipelago, white sandy beaches of the East Baltic Coast and South Coast Baltic, authentic islands) make the Baltic Sea an attractive boating region for sailors and motor boaters.

Despite high class infrastructure and an attractive destination profile with diverse nature & culture experiences in relative geographical proximity, it still lags behind international competitors (in particular: the Mediterranean Sea) in terms of visibility and tapping economic potentials of leisure boating.

The image of the Baltic Sea region from a tourism perspective is very comprehensive, reflecting its diverse offerings, rich cultural heritage, and natural beauty. It has a strong international identity and is well known, among other for:

  • Natural Beauty and Scenic Landscape
  • Rich Cultural and Historical Heritage
  • Vibrant Festivals and Event
  • Wellness and Relaxatio
  • Culinary Appeal
  • Modern Amenities and Infrastructure

Although the Baltic Sea is particularly vulnerable to the impacts of climate change, including rising temperatures, sea-level rise, and changes in salinity, in terms of leisure boating these challenges bring more opportunities to the region. Heat waves in the south of Europe let more and more people consider spending summer vacation in a milder climate, which leads to development opportunity for the Baltic boating tourism. At the same time, climate change brings “natural” prolongation of the boating season, as it already becomes warmer in spring and active sailing season could last longer in autumn. Milder winters in combination with the modern technologies may allow boat owners to keep their vessels in water during the winter season, thus reducing costs, and the same time, inviting for a short boat ride on a warmer day.

In the same time the Baltic Sea region is increasingly focusing on sustainable and eco-friendly tourism practices, promoting conservation efforts and responsible travel. It is important to underline that in the Baltic Sea sustainable boating goes far beyond environmental issues, with social and economic sustianbility being treated as its core ingredient.

Since the beginning of BaltSusBoating 2030 project, our Project team have been working together to propose an interesting and convincing brand and marketing strategy for the Region, taking into account various aspects of Baltic boating.

We have had an ambition that our work will facilitate the establishment of the Baltic Sea as a trendsetter sustainable and accessible boating destination that balances environmental protection, cultural preservation, and economic growth, ensuring a thriving ecosystem and vibrant communities for future generations.

It’s time to share the results!
