Introduction and collaborative effort

This initiative, a collaborative effort among research units from Latvia, Poland, and Lithuania, has successfully addressed the challenges posed by tourism on our water resources. Throughout the project, we have conducted extensive pilot studies on the water quality of selected lakes, providing valuable insights into the current state of these vital ecosystems.  Our networking hub has emerged as a key platform for sharing knowledge and best practices, fostering collaboration between local communities, governing authorities, and the scientific community.

Key achievements

Key achievements of the Lakes Connect project include:

• Research and monitoring: Comprehensive studies on microplastic pollution and other contaminants have highlighted the impact of tourism on lake ecosystems. These findings are crucial for informing future conservation efforts.
• Capacity building: Through a series of meetings and training sessions, we have empowered local stakeholders with the tools and knowledge necessary to implement sustainable practices that protect water quality.
• International cooperation: The project has facilitated the exchange of experiences and strategies among partners, enhancing our collective ability to tackle the challenges posed by tourism.
• Promotion of responsible tourism: By raising awareness about the importance of preserving our lakes, we have encouraged visitors to engage in practices that minimize their environmental footprint.
