Aarhus Municipality’s progress in co-creating Nature-based solutions for stormwater management in Nye

19 August 2024
City of Aarhus is creating a development and stormwater management plan for the catchment area of Bueris and Ravnbakke streams. These streams as well as a new suburb Nye are part of the Aarhus pilot in City Blues project where baseline scenarios were developed together with stakeholders.
Technical details

The Ravnsbakke stream and Bueris stream are small waterbodies that are in the north-eastern part of Aarhus. These streams run through agricultural, urban and recreational areas. The city is planning to develop a residental area called Nye near the streams, increasing the load on the rainwater runoff from paved areas and roofs into these two small streams. Therefore, Aarhus creates a development and stormwater management plan for the whole cathment area of Bueris and Ravnbakke streams in close collaboration with the local water utility.

Nye is an entirely new suburb for 13.500 inhabitants north of Aarhus. The development of Nye is based on principles for sustainable urban planning combining the best aspects from the dense city centres with the open green suburbs.

Together with stakeholders, baseline scenarios were developed in Aarhus last spring. The first meetings and workshops had the aim to coordinate and align visions and needs with different city departments, organisations and companies.

The co-creation process has included all relevant city departments and experts, the utility company, stakeholders and consultants The scenarios stated that the development plan must consider flooding, erosion and water quality, and that the solutions should be implemented in a way that also improves biodiversity and recreational values.

Aarhus works with landscape-based climate adaption, securing the blue and green interests in the planning and creating time and space for the water. Aarhus Municipality will propose the possible retail project for reopening and restoration of the stream sites using nature-based solutions. There are several sites along the river that have been identified as possible restoration sites. The City Blues project would give the momentum and context to start this process and implement the project during the three-year period.
