Technical details

Students in the research seminar “Liveability” at the Geography Department of the Christian-Albrechts-University Kiel, Associated Organisation of the project, have conducted an in-depth SWOT analysis of Kiel’s adult education center (VHS) aiming to explore the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats involved in transforming the VHS into a vibrant “third place.”

The insights gained from the students’ research will now inform measures to develop the VHS into an inclusive space for all, leveraging the principles of public interest design. The cooperation between the City of Kiel, the Boell Foundation Schleswig-Holstein, and the University has yielded valuable perspectives. The students’ work provides a robust empirical foundation to create more user-friendly and effective measures for the VHS.

Overall, this fruitful cooperation not only enhanced the students’ academic experience by connecting theory with real-world application but also empowered the City of Kiel with actionableinsights to improve community engagement and liveability.
