Technical details

On 1st March Minister of Environmental Protection and Regional Development Inga Bērziņa visited Valmiera Municipality Government. In the meeting with the Valmiera Municipality Administration, Jānis Baiks, Chairman of Valmiera Municipality Government, and Evija Nagle, Head of the Development Department, introduced the minister with ongoing projects in the municipality. Municipality presented the project ‘Circular spaces’, its main outcomes and the importance of cooperating with different partners in the Baltic Sea Reagon.

On 2nd May Inese Vaidere, member of the European Parliament, visited Valmiera Municipality Government. In the meeting with the Valmiera Municipality Administration, Ričards Gailums, Deputy Chairman of Valmiera Municipality Government, and Evija Nagle, Head of the Development Department, discussed the main priorities in the municipality. One of the priorities is introducing circular economy principles into different areas of municipal responsibility.

Last autumn, the municipality signed a memorandum of goodwill for the establishment of a bioregion in the Gauja National Park. By signing the memorandum of goodwill, the municipality undertakes to work in these directions of action, which will strengthen environmentally friendly actions in various sectors. Although the creation of the bioregion refers to the territory of the Gauja National Park, the municipality, by signing the memorandum, will apply the set goals to the entire administrative territory of the municipality.

Participation in this project also connects with priority areas for action in the bioregion – to reduce the amount of waste generated and to educate inhabitants on healthy, environmentally friendly and on circular economy based lifestyle.

Both Inga Bērziņa and Inese Vaidere highly appreciated municipality’s efforts in to moving towards circular economy and how it is a great chance for the municipality to cooperate with partners in the project and learn different things/methods that could be adapted into the municipality’s work, and then transferred to other municipalities in the country or beyond.
