Boosting hydrogen economy in Rostock Region, Germany

“Hydrogen will support us to take full advantage of the surplus of green electricity we are producing from wind and sun.”

says Reinhard Meyer, Minister of Economics, Infrastructure, Tourism and Labour Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. By collaborating within the HyTruck project, Mecklenburg-Vorpommern wants to accelerate its hydrogen economy, especially in Greater Rostock.

As a region at the heart of Europe, Mecklenburg-Vorpommern is firmly anchored in the European Union and the Baltic Sea region. In cooperation with other partners from the Baltic Sea Region, Mecklenburg-Vorpommern wants to develop solutions that support public authorities to build up a network of transnational hydrogen refuelling stations within the project “HyTruck”. Green hydrogen is a promising alternative for the decarbonization of freight transport.

The Greater Rostock region is highly ambitious in terms of hydrogen. The region has excellent prerequisites to lead the way as the first hydrogen hub in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. Starting with the Rostock Energy Port, the planned Important Projects of Common European Interest (IPCEI), the planned hydrogen core network that runs from Rostock to the south, the cross-connection between Rostock and Lubmin, as well as the excellent research institutions in the region; all these factors will help to accelerate the hydrogen ramp-up in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. In the pilot region Greater Rostock, many haulage companies have already recognized the necessity and opportunities of switching to alternative fuels. Currently, two hydrogen refuelling stations (HRS) in the Greater Rostock are in operation. A hydrogen refuelling station for cars from H2Mobility and the first hydrogen refuelling station in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern for trucks from H2APEX in Rostock-Laage. The pilot implementation phase will look into future demand for HRS and opportunities to fit them into the hydrogen value chains, incl. the national hydrogen backbone that is expected to develop in the next years.
