Project summary
Many rural communities in the Baltic Sea Region (BSR) face challenges such as social disparities, polarization, and disintegration. To strengthen social resilience, citizens need a sense of belonging, self-efficacy, and trust in institutions. Participatory processes between municipalities and citizens can foster these elements by creating opportunities for collaboration, dialogue, and shared decision-making, ultimately building stronger, more cohesive communities. With our SISU project – inspired by the Finnish concept of resilience and determination – we invite municipalities in rural areas of Poland, Finland, and Germany to join us on a treasure hunt. Together, we aim to uncover the best solutions for strengthening social resilience and establishing participatory mechanisms in these communities. Community scouts will explore good practices across the BSR, bringing their findings back to their communities. These treasures will offer practical solutions to enhance social cohesion, critical literacy skills, and citizen engagement. In dialogue sessions, public authorities and citizens will collaboratively decide which solutions best fit their regional context. Designed for scalability and sustainability, the project ensures long-term impact across the BSR. This approach contributes to making the region shine, transforming villages and small towns into the pearls envisioned in the VASAB strategy for territorial development—offering high quality of life and strong networks.
