NextCircle

The project NextCircle helps family-owned smaller companies turn business transfer to young entrepreneurs into an opportunity for growth and innovation, while equipping business support organisations and local authorities to facilitate that transition.
Across the BSR, many family businesses established in the 1990s are now facing a generational transition. Without timely and well-managed succession, many risk closure, job loss, or sale outside the region, weakening local economies and reducing opportunities for young people to build their future locally. At the same time, younger successors bring strong motivation to introduce innovation, digitalisation, and sustainable practices, but these potentials are not yet fully realised. The project addresses this challenge by supporting family-owned SMEs, BSOs (intermediaries), and local public authorities in managing business transfer as a driver for renewal and innovation. Many actors still lack practical tools and cooperation models to support the process effectively. Barriers include limited succession expertise, weak intergenerational dialogue, and insufficient integration of innovation and sustainability into business transfer. The project develops and applies a transnational Toolkit, facilitation framework and policy briefs which are practical resources that strengthen intermediaries’ advisory capacity, guide SMEs in planning succession, and inform local public authorities on effective support measures. Through improved succession readiness and greater youth participation in family businesses, the project enhances regional resilience, drives innovation, and supports the long-term retention of young people in regions across the BSR.
