CommUNITY MOVE

The project CommUNITY MOVE empowers communities and municipalities to transform outdoor spaces in rural areas and small towns into vibrant places for movement, play, and social interaction, strengthening well-being and community life.
Citizens in rural areas often lack inclusive, safe, and inspiring public spaces for movement and social interaction. These communities face shrinking populations and limited resources. As people move to cities, rural areas risk losing their vitality, while remaining residents have few opportunities to stay active, connected, and healthy. Although placemaking has proven effective in urban areas, it is rarely adapted to rural contexts, where limited infrastructure and dispersed populations create a gap in access to movement, inclusion, and community life. By reimagining existing outdoors spaces into places for play and connection, rural placemaking helps communities strengthen participation, ownership, and collaboration, boosting wellbeing and resilience despite economic and demographic pressures. CommUNITY MOVE bridges the rural–urban gap through inclusive placemaking and the promotion of physical literacy, our lifelong relationship with movement, empowering local actors to reactivate outdoor spaces and strengthening community identity. The project objectives are to: Collect and review good practices from urban placemaking, identifying success factors Adapt them into 3-5 models and guidelines tailored to each rural areas Build capacity through training sessions to equip target groups and beneficiaries with the skills to design and implement inclusive and resource-sensitive interventions Pilot and document actions and share the best examples at the local and national level
