The webinar discussed the concept of risk in water reuse, explaining the principles and practical applications of QMRA. Through live demonstrations and guided exercises, participants learned how to assess microbial risks across various treatment processes, water sources, and end uses such as irrigation or drinking water.
Originally developed under the AquaNES project and further refined within the WaterMan framework, the QMRA tool allows users to evaluate health risks posed by pathogens based on the reference pathogens rotavirus, Campylobacter jejuni, and Cryptosporidium parvum. It enables assessments across different water sources, treatment stages, and exposure scenarios.
With its user-friendly interface, the tool offers flexible options for both default and customised risk assessments. Users can simulate real-world conditions, compare treatment options, and calculate the log removal values (LRVs) needed to meet safety standards. Results are presented as annual infection risks and DALYs (disability-adjusted life years), offering a clear basis for evidence-based decisions.
Created to be accessible for both experts and non-experts—including researchers, utilities, and policymakers—the QMRA tool supports scenario-based analyses tailored to local needs. It serves as a practical, user-friendly solution for developing safe and sustainable water reuse strategies.
