A Day of data collection for SmartAging in Ulvila: Community, insight and innovation

On a sunny day in early June, the town of Ulvila (Finland) came alive with conversations, movement, and shared purpose. As part of the SmartAging Project, we organized a local data collection and community engagement event in collaboration with Ulvilan Invalidit ry.

The event brought together seniors, local residents, volunteers, and SmartAging experts (from SAMK and Ikigaia Ltd.) for a meaningful day of activity. The focus was simple but powerful: to listen, observe, and understand the needs and everyday experiences of older adults, directly from the people themselves.

Throughout the day, the atmosphere was filled with energy and openness. Participants took part in a variety of interactive activities, from guided light exercise sessions to informal discussions about living independently, using technology at home, and staying socially connected.

Our team worked closely with attendees to collect valuable data through conversations and observations. These insights will help shape the project’s next steps, especially in designing and adapting smart home technologies, digital tools, and service models that support aging in place.

Of course, no community day would be complete without good food and a warm social setting. A casual BBQ was organized at the site, giving participants time to connect, relax, and enjoy the early summer weather. The friendly environment made it easy for everyone to share openly and contribute meaningfully.

This event in Ulvila highlighted the importance of working with communities, not just for them. It reminded us that innovation in aging is not only about technology, it’s about trust, inclusion, and real-world relevance.
