From Invasive to Innovative: RoundGoby Partners Meet in Lithuania

17 November 2025
The RoundGoby project partners came together in Lithuania for two inspiring days of learning, tasting, and collaboration in Klaipėda and Kaunas.
Technical details

Klaipėda: From Catch to Can
The visit began at project partner Baltijos Konservai, where RoundGoby partners toured the fish canning facility and explored the full production process. The tour included tasting a diverse range of products, including smoked sprat, salmon, mackerel, and cod liver in oil.

What’s more, Baltijos Konservai has invested in new equipment to launch small-scale production of canned minced Round Goby, one of the main project pilots.

The day continued with local fishers, who demonstrated passive, selective traps used to catch Round Goby. These methods effectively prevent bycatch of seals and birds, showcasing how sustainability and efficiency can go hand in hand. Currently, most of the catch is exported to Latvia for processing, underlining the potential for more local value creation.

Kaunas: Ideas, Insights, and Innovation
In Kaunas, partners reviewed progress across project pilots and aligned on next steps. Loreta Bražinskaitė from the Lithuanian Ministry of Agriculture shared research insights on Round Goby, sparking valuable discussion and future collaboration opportunities.

The hosts Kaunas University of Technology (KTU) also presented new canned prototypes, one with seaweed and another in sunflower oil. After an enthusiastic tasting, the oil-based version emerged as the favorite.

With strong momentum and shared ambition, the project now enters its final year focused on sustainable fishing practices and high-quality Round Goby products.
