New Handbook Highlights the Untapped Potential of Water Reuse

01 September 2025
Water scarcity and climate change are pressing global challenges — and smarter ways of using and reusing water are part of the solution. The Interreg funded ReNutriWater project has now published its Handbook on Water Reuse, a comprehensive guide offering practical strategies, best practices, and innovative tools to support sustainable water management in the Baltic Sea Region and beyond.
Technical details

The Handbook is the result of extensive consultations with experts, practitioners, and policy actors. It highlights the importance of water reuse as both a solution to global water stress and a means of protecting the environment while managing resources more sustainably.

Rather than focusing on theory alone, the publication draws heavily on hands-on experience. It explores the legal frameworks governing water reuse, shares experiences from pilot projects carried out in the ReNutriWater project, and presents research on disinfection methods, nutrient recovery, and applications in greenhouses. It also introduces a decision-support tool, called the WaterSafe Tool, that has been designed to help users select the optimal water treatment technology and manage water effectively on local and regional levels. In addition, the Handbook offers guidance on risk assessment, develops sustainable business models tailored to the water sector, and provides recommendations on how to raise awareness, educate stakeholders, and communicate effectively about water reuse.

By presenting expertise and best practices derived from pilot tests, the Handbook equips municipalities, industries, researchers, and other stakeholders with practical knowledge and actionable strategies that can be applied in diverse contexts. Its aim is not only to inform but also to inspire collaboration and innovation, ensuring that the lessons learned can be adapted and applied widely throughout Europe and beyond.
