Making Waves in Brussels: Advocating for Water Reuse Solutions

07 October 2024
Technical details

In an exciting step forward for water sustainability, ReNutriWater project partners, Šiauliai Chamber of Commerce, Industry and Crafts and National Regions’ Development Agency from Lithuania, recently had the opportunity to present their innovative work to key European policymakers in Brussels. The team, supported by Alfredas Jonuška, a member of the European Economic and Social Committee (EESC), engaged in a constructive dialogue with prominent figures behind the 26 October 2023 Declaration for an EU Blue Deal: Pietro Francesco De Lotto and Kinga Joó.

One of the Declaration’s major recommendations—the appointment of a dedicated EU Commissioner in charge of water portfolio —has already come into effect, highlighting the urgency of addressing water-related challenges across Europe. Swedish politician Jessika Roswall, now serving as European Commissioner for Environment, Water Resilience, and Competitive Circular Economy, will have a critical role in driving forward the European Water Resilience Strategy. Her work will ensure that water resource management is integrated into a broader environmental strategy, emphasizing sustainability and resilience across Europe.

During the visit, the Lithuanian team shared insights and updates on the ReNutriWater project with an assistant to European Parliament (EP) member Paulius Saudargas. While the Parliament was in session in Strasbourg at the time, this exchange provided a valuable opportunity to keep key stakeholders informed about the project’s progress.

The visit to Eurochambres also proved to be a source of inspiration. The ReNutriWater partner from Šiauliai received valuable feedback and explored collaboration opportunities with Joel Fernandes, Ia Khodeli, Laura Velase, and Giulia Rocchi, opening doors for potential synergies with other initiatives in the water sustainability space.

The results and future opportunities from these visits were shared with the rest of the ReNutriWater project partners during a project meeting held at the end of September in Riga, Latvia.

The entire ReNutriWater team has now emerged even more informed and better equipped to advance water reuse solutions. By actively engaging with EU policymakers and exploring collaborative opportunities, the project continues to enhance its visibility and impact at the European level, moving closer to its goal of promoting sustainable water management across the Baltic Sea Region, with the support of Interreg BSR.
