Hawkhill - An example of regenerative tourism

During our REDIRECT partnership conference in Finland, we visited Hawkhill, a family-owned cottage resort with regenerative initiatives and activities, involving both visitors and local residents.

The REDIRECT Partners met for a conference in Helsinki on October 29th – 30th 2025. During our stay, we visited Hawkhill, which is about an hour’s drive from Helsinki. Hawkhill is a family-owned cottage resort in the middle of a national park, with eight cottages situated along the lake shore. Hawkhill is more than accommodation and a resort, however, and strives to be sustainable. To do so, they organize activities for locals and guests, some of which are regenerative.

In early summer, Hawkhill organizes an extensive removal of the invasive lupin in the area. Lupins are considered an invasive plant to the local fauna. Participating in this removal are both guests staying at Hawkhill, as well as locals from the nearby villages. With this event, Hawkhill offers their guests the opportunity to contribute to the restoration of the local nature.

Hawkhill also organizes workshops, where some of the lupins are used for dyeing clothes.

Hawkhill is also regenerative on a smaller scale. Guests staying at the accommodation have the opportunity to help make small bug hotels and bug fences, from dead branches and leaves. The guests do so alongside the local residents who run Hawkhill. The bug hotels are then placed in the nature around the cottages at the site, contributing to nature, and helping the bugs thrive.

These initiatives are great examples of what makes a place not only sustainable, but truly regenerative. Hawkhill’s guests are offered the opportunity to improve the site in collaboration with the locals through specific actions.
