PestSpace in the polish media: how a modern crop protection system is being built

30 June 2025
The Polish Press Agency (PAP) has published an article dedicated to the PestSpace project, offering a step-by-step overview of how an innovative international system for early identification of crop pathogens and pests is being developed.
Technical details

The article features commentary from  Julia Pawłowska, Ph.D., Ds.C. project coordinator at the University of Warsaw, who provides expert insight into the project’s goals, methodology and progress to date.

In response to climate change and the emergence of new agricultural threats, project partners are building a shared data platform that combines advanced molecular techniques with digital imaging of plant disease symptoms and pest damage. The first phase involves experimental fields in each partner country, where winter wheat and faba bean have been sown and are being monitored without the use of crop protection products – all to collect reliable, real-world data for developing the system.

What comes next? How will scientists integrate genetics with imaging? Which institutions are involved across the Baltic Sea region?
