Can plants send warning signals? Thanks to PlutoF – a powerful biodiversity tracking tool – the answer is yes!
18 June 2025
Developed by an Estonian research team (University of Tartu), PlutoF is an innovative platform that functions like an early warning system for plant health. By analyzing environmental DNA samples and employing AI-powered tools, system provides scientists, farmers, and policymakers with precise data on emerging threats to specific crops.
The project was initiated by Professor Urmas Kõljalg, a biodiversity researcher at the University of Tartu, whose vision was to bring biological data into the digital era and create a shared global platform for managing biological information.
As part of the PestSpace project, this solution is now being scaled and implemented in Finland, Latvia, Lithuania and Poland — combining science, data, and technology to support climate adaptation and respond effectively to new pest threats.
How does PlutoF work in practice? How is the system evolving? How does it help stakeholders respond before it’s too late?
