On November 26 and 27, 2024, the ORMOBASS project consortium met for its second progress meeting in Stockholm. The gathering was marked by lively discussions about the results of recent work preparing for the piloting phase of the developed R-Mode and GNSS interference detection solutions.

Building on these outcomes, the partners collaboratively drafted the first version of the future system design. This draft considers the specific requirements of each participating country. In addition, the consortium developed a detailed pilot plan for R-Mode deployment in the Baltic Sea, a roadmap for R-Mode standardization, and a strategy for testing R-Mode under interference conditions.

A highlight of the meeting was the visit to the R-Mode-enabled medium frequency transmitter site in Nynäshamn. Staff from the Swedish Maritime Administration provided a detailed tour, explaining the technical installation developed during the R-Mode Baltic project and highlighting its specific features to the ORMOBASS partners.

The visit sparked in-depth discussions, particularly with Finnish and Estonian partners, who are currently preparing the extension of R-Mode functionality at stations in Finland and

Estonia. Valuable experiences from Sweden and Germany, as well as documentation from the completed R-Mode Baltic project, are serving as a foundation for these efforts.

“The insights from Sweden’s early R-Mode deployments are invaluable for shaping our installations in Finland and Estonia,” said Stefan Gewies from German Aerospace Center.

With strong collaboration and shared knowledge, ORMOBASS continues to make steady progress toward operational satellite-independent navigation for the Baltic Sea region
