24 October 2024
As part of the Researchers’ Night on September 27, we met with the “Pūcītes skoliņa” group of preschool “Mežmaliņa” and the head of the administration of Priekuļi Municipality Evita Šīrante to look back together at the past potato growing season, share experiences, and find answers to interesting questions. In the introduction to the event, researcher Mg. Biol. Lāsma Rābante-Hāne and lead researcher, potato breeder Dr. Agr. Ilze Skrabule, told what varieties of potato tubers were entrusted to potato messengers from the preschool and the municipality and why these tubers were so special.
The kids shared a fascinating story about the potato path from the hands of AREI researchers to delicious potato pancakes. The photos document the preparation of hollows, the planting of potatoes, the welcoming of the first leaves, the precautions taken to prevent beetles from eating the potatoes, and, of course, the children’s delight at the delicious pancakes made from their own, cherished potatoes. In anticipation of the harvest, the children in their drawings dressed potatoes in princess dresses and decorated them with crowns of kings.
Evita Šīrante, head of the administration of Priekuļi Minicipality, told how successful growing potatoes in Priekuļi Saules Park was. She was proud of the rich harvest and presented the results of tasting the self-grown potatoes. “Agrie Dzeltenie” emerged as the most delicious potato from Saules Park.
In the end, the participants of the event had the opportunity to ask questions to the potato breeder, Ilze Skrabule, and taste potatoes of several varieties created and grown in Priekuļi.
The team of the project “MainPotRe” and the AREI Priekuļi Research Center thank the “Pūcīte skoliņa” group from the preschool “Mežmaliņa” and the administration of the Priekuļi Municipality for the cultivation and research of potatoes.
It’s nice to know that we can all come together to find a topic together, discuss, and share experiences on a topic as supposedly commonplace as potatoes. We can say without a doubt that POTATOES UNITE!
