New Test S-100 Electronic Chart Software under development in the MaDaMe project
27 August 2024
As a part of the MaDaMe activities, Novia University of Applied Sciences is developing an electronic chart software that can consume S-100 data based on the new standard for the transfer of hydrographic data adopted by the IHO, International Hydrographic Organization. This ECS will serve as a testbed for the innovative digital services developed in the project, namely Digital Navigational Warnings (S-124), Digital Aids to Navigation (S-125), and Digital Vessel Traffic Services, Traffic Clearance (S-212).Â
The efforts carried out within the development work are aimed at facilitating the testing and evaluation of these digital information sharing and messaging services. The ECS will act as the receiving end on the client side of the pilots planned in the project such as on-board ships, and in simulators. This serves the visualization aspect of the pilots, allowing the mariner/operator to view the S-100 information on an electronic chart software designed specifically for these three services.Â
Furthermore, the software takes into consideration the connectivity and cybersecurity aspects of the pilots. Hence, the SECOM standard (Secure exchange and communication of S-100 based products) is planned to be implemented. Also, the MCP integration is on the table as a decentralized platform for secure and reliable exchange of information in the maritime domain.Â
MaDaMe consortium is actively involved in the global standardization efforts and working groups of the S-100 environment. This offers the new testbed a chance to contribute to these activities by participating in active testing sessions, and consuming S-100 data from other providers around the world, highlighting the shortcomings, and proposing new ways to improve and refine these digital services.Â
