How Sand Therapy Can Reshape Play and Learning in Schools
23 October 2025
Smarter Step piloted sand therapy sessions in several educational institutions, and the results are catching the attention of teachers, parents, and school administrators.
What is sand therapy?
Sand therapy is a creative, hands-on activity that invites children to build miniature worlds using sand and tiny figures. It blends sensory exploration, imaginative play, and social interaction. In a typical session, children explore different sand textures, arrange figures or objects, and construct scenes that reflect stories, feelings, or everyday experiences. The process is open-ended: there is no right or wrong, only exploration.
Why is it worth adopting this activity?
Teachers report that sand therapy supports a range of developmental goals. It encourages fine motor skills as children dig, sift, and sculpt; it stimulates narrative thinking as they invent scenes and characters; and it fosters emotional expression in a nonverbal, low-pressure way. Because the activity is tactile and calming, many children are more willing to experiment, share, and cooperate during group sessions. Educational institutions involved in the pilot have already begun integrating sand therapy into daily activities.
