Project Partners meet in Helsinki to advance hydrogen derivative readiness at Baltic Sea Ports

The H2Deri@BSP project partners gathered in Helsinki for the latest all-partner meeting, continuing the joint work on advancing hydrogen derivative solutions for sustainable maritime transport in the Baltic Sea Region. Following the previous meeting in Lulea, partners reconvened in Finland for a three-day programme combining site visits and strategic discussions on the ongoing development and testing phase of project deliverables.

The programme began with a visit to Katajanokka and the South Harbour area of the Port of Helsinki, where participants explored ongoing infrastructure developments and greening initiatives implemented by the port. The visit highlighted the port’s dual role as one of Europe’s busiest passenger hubs and a frontrunner in implementing sustainability measures within port operations.

A key highlight of the meeting was the technical site visit to the Lohja biogas facility, by the host project partner Gasum. The visit provided first-hand insight into how bio-waste is transformed into biogas and organic fertilisers, demonstrating the practical implementation of circular economy principles and their relevance for decarbonising maritime fuel systems.

The subsequent partner meeting focused on reviewing the progress of ongoing testing activities related to the project’s key deliverables. Partners exchanged insights on validation processes and identified further cooperation opportunities across the consortium. This phase marks an important step in the project, as solutions move from development into real-world testing and application.

The discussions reinforced the importance of cross-border cooperation in enabling the uptake of hydrogen derivatives and supporting the transition towards more sustainable and integrated maritime energy systems in the Baltic Sea Region. The consortium will continue its joint work in the coming months, with the next all-partner meeting scheduled to take place in Klaipėda, Lithuania.
