Workshop in Valmiera: Harnessing the potential of the Energy Equilibrium platform
10 February 2025
On February 5, 2025, a workshop was held in Valmiera, where participants had the opportunity to familiarize themselves with the Energy Equilibrium modelling platform. The workshop brought together a wide range of participants from different European countries, including Latvia, Greece, Poland, Belgium, Slovenia, Hungary and Spain. They ranged from local authorities and regional development agencies to universities, research institutes and private companies.
Although this event was not directly related to the Energy Equilibrium project, the platform was used within the Green4Heat project to provide a hands-on exercise for representatives of municipalities and other stakeholders to develop solutions that maximize the share of renewable energy sources in the energy system while minimizing overall system costs.
The key objective focused on designing solutions that would maximize RES integration into the energy system in a way that would reduce overall costs.
As in the previous group modelling sessions, participants were divided into groups, each with a specific task – to make changes to the relevant sections, for instance “Buildings” and ” Production”, in order to model and analyse the most efficient solutions. They each defined their own strategic goals, such as renovating 70% of apartment buildings or building an 80 MW solar park, and analysed the impact of the system through simulations, concluding with a presentation of their findings.
The workshop was a success and once again demonstrated the applicability of the Energy Equilibrium tool for energy planning and simulation. With the feedback provided by the participants, we conclude that the event was very useful, but the feedback highlighted the need to develop additional guidelines or handouts to facilitate the use of the platform and ensure efficient operation of the tool. Insights of this kind will be particularly useful in the next phases of the project, when practical guidelines for users will be developed.
To extend the use of the platform, it is essential to share the results of the workshop on a broader scale, involving new municipalities, businesses and academic institutions.
Fostering cooperation between relevant stakeholders will help to promote innovation in the energy sector and strengthen sustainable development.
