Technical details

On May 9th, a dynamic seminar took place in Gulbene, gathering regional leaders, experts, and stakeholders to discuss advancing the transition to renewable energy. The event opened with a warm welcome from Jānis Barinskis, a representative of the Gulbene Municipality, setting the stage for a day of meaningful discussions and collaboration.

Krišjānis Upāns, also from Gulbene, shared insights from the municipality’s hands-on experience in shifting to renewable energy. He introduced the Energy Equilibrium platform, developed as part of the project, and demonstrated its capability to simulate various future energy scenarios. As Krišjānis mentioned, “It’s like dreaming responsibly—you can explore what a renewable future might look like.”

Prof. Dagnija Blumberga and Assoc. Prof. Dace Lauka followed with a presentation on renewable energy conversion technologies and the integration of wind and hydrogen. They highlighted the importance of combining solar, wind, biomass, hydropower, and biogas to create a balanced and sustainable energy mix. With the increased use of renewables, the role of energy storage is becoming increasingly vital.

Assoc. Prof. Vladimirs Kirsanovs further inspired attendees with an example from Ādaži municipality, demonstrating how local governments can lead the way in ensuring energy security and sustainability. His presentation focused on Ādaži’s journey toward climate neutrality, serving as an example for other municipalities to follow.

The seminar wrapped up with a hands-on session led by RTU VASSI researcher Ģirts Bohvalovs. Participants from municipalities and companies had the opportunity to explore the Energy Equilibrium platform and test how feasible 100% renewable energy might be in their regions. This session allowed attendees to gain a clearer vision of how renewable energy could be implemented in their communities.

The platform is available online. Everyone is welcome to give it a try!

A heartfelt thank you to all who participated in the Gulbene seminar. The renewable energy transition is already underway—let’s continue to move forward together.
