Technical details

Last April in Avignon, France, Darius Danusevičius, coordinator of the DIVERSE_GENE_WATCH project, took part in the 24th European Forest Genetic Resources Programme (EUFORGEN) Steering Committee meeting. EUFORGEN is a key European initiative that supports the conservation and sustainable use of forest genetic resources as part of sustainable forest management.

During the meeting, Danusevičius introduced the DIVERSE_GENE_WATCH project, highlighting the critical role of Forest Genetic Monitoring (FGM) in safeguarding and managing forest genetic diversity. The presentation emphasized how the project contributes to advancing methodologies for monitoring genetic variation in forest ecosystems.

The meeting exchange was closely linked to the DIVERSE_GENE_WATCH’s ongoing methodology development. In its piloting phase, the project builds on existing European forest genetic resource structures – EUFGIS-registered Gene Conservation Units (GCUs). These GCUs serve as the main basis for the project’s FGM plots, as they already contain sufficiently large tree populations and provide long-term sites for monitoring forest tree populations

The meeting also offered an opportunity to promote the Forest Genetic Monitoring approach developed within DIVERSE_GENE_WATCH and to invite interested partners and experts to follow the development of the Baltic Sea Region Forest Genetic Monitoring network.
