Workshop 2 (Lappeenranta, 10 June 2025)

The goal of the workshop was to share Finnish experience and knowledge on cooperation between cement and recycling industries. The focus was on the Kimura process (developed in Finland) for recycling composite waste into cement production, replacing both fossil fuels and raw materials.

Presentations:
-Finnish Plastics Industries Federation introduced the Kimura process.
-Kuusakoski Recycling showcased its industrial-scale facility processing 6,000 tonnes of composite waste per year.
-Finnsementti demonstrated co-processing in cement kilns, where glass fibre is integrated into clinker.

Participants toured Finnsementti’s Lappeenranta plant, observing composite waste use in practice. As an outcome of the workshop the participants gained new insights, discussed challenges (e.g. waste quality, awareness, small volumes), and recognized opportunities for scaling solutions.
