CompositeCircle kicked off in Lappeenranta: setting the stage for circular innovation

The CompositeCircle project officially launched with a multi-day kick-off meeting in Lappeenranta, Finland, bringing together partners from across the Baltic Sea Region. Hosted by Finnish Plastics Industries Foundation and Centria, the meeting marked the beginning of a collaborative journey toward smarter, more sustainable solutions for composite recycling.

During the event, partners explored the key challenge that CompositeCircle aims to solve: the growing volume of composite waste—especially from wind turbine blades and other fibre-reinforced products—that currently ends up in landfills or incinerators due to a lack of viable recycling solutions.

The discussions focused on both the big picture and the practical steps ahead. Partners shared insights into regional strengths and infrastructure, from material handling and logistics to pilot facilities and industrial expertise. Together, we mapped out how these assets will contribute to piloting new circular solutions, from improved waste sorting to advanced recycling techniques like solvolysis.

But beyond the technical planning, the meeting laid the groundwork for something equally important: partnership. Getting to know each other face-to-face helped strengthen the sense of shared purpose, trust, and energy needed to drive meaningful change across borders.

CompositeCircle isn’t just about recycling old materials. It’s about designing a circular system that works, from collection and transport to reuse, recovery, and even policy guidance. As the project moves forward, partners will test new solutions, engage with industry, and share knowledge to ensure impact far beyond the project’s timeline.
