Technical details

A recent training session in Helsinki brought together participants from diverse organizations to explore the new geospatial drone landing site planning tool Aalto University and National Land Survey of Finland (NLS) have developed as part of the CITYAM project. The tool offers cities a way to seek suitable landing areas. Experts from Aalto created the framework which NLS’s specialists then developed further.

The event fostered crucial collaboration, essential for the future of urban air mobility (UAM). Beyond MML and Aalto University’s presentations on the tool and planning process, insights were shared by Christina Suomi (U-space Project Director, City of Helsinki) and Mika Järvenpää (UAV Manufacturing and Operations Specialist, Nokia). Aalto emphasized stakeholder collaboration in UAM planning, while Suomi detailed Helsinki’s holistic approach to drone deployment. Järvenpää highlighted critical ground infrastructure considerations, particularly connectivity.

Following MML’s tool presentation, a demo and interactive workshops yielded fresh perspectives from participants across various sectors, many new to the process.
