Hamburg is piloting drones in the port area
15 August 2024
In Hamburg, the summer of 2024 brought two drone pilots to the port area. The first one is about infrastructure inspection and using drones to inspect roads, bridges, and waterways that need repairs. Because the Hamburg Port has a lot of streets and waterways in the area, they usually need 2–3 people driving around all day every day to check the area for holes or damages. Drones can do this much faster and can be flown from the control center at the Hamburg dronePORT The pilot flights have shown positive results.
The second use case focuses on polder control. Hamburg is a harbor city and there are altogether 39 polders. These are areas that can be closed when a flood is coming. efore a flood is coming, the authorities must check if the doors are closed. They have more than 100 flood doors and from the air they are much quicker to check than from land or water. When the flood receded, the authorities then need to check if there are trees or something in the water that can damage the ships which can also be done with drones.
These pilots are part of the CITYAM project and aim to showcase how drones could be used in ports. During autumn 2024, Helsinki will also organize a pilot in their port.
