Ship and boat recycling in focus: Watch the Hamburg pilot video

03 November 2026
What happens to ships and boats when they reach the end of their operational lives? A video produced by Circular Ports project partner EMR Group takes a closer look at ship and boat recycling at the Port of Hamburg.
Technical details

The Port of Hamburg is home to one of the six pilots within the Circular Ports project. The Hamburg pilot explores opportunities to improve the recycling of end-of-life ships and boats, focusing on how valuable materials can be recovered and returned to circulation.

Ships and boats contain significant amounts of recyclable materials, particularly metals. Recovering these materials offers opportunities to reduce waste and the need for virgin raw materials. However, making vessel recycling more circular also requires attention to how materials are handled, separated and processed.

The video, produced by project partner EMR Group (European Metal Recycling), introduces the topic of ship and boat recycling and highlights the potential of circular solutions in the port environment.
