Lappeenranta pilot brings companies together to explore industrial symbioses

The workshop was organised as part of the Circular Ports pilot in Lappeenranta, which focuses on identifying material flows and creating industrial symbioses in the port area. The aim is to explore how materials and side streams generated by companies could be better utilised and kept in circulation.

A total of 13 companies and 29 participants joined the first workshop. Participants were introduced to the principles of circular economy and industrial symbiosis, with a particular focus on utilising existing material side streams and waste flows.

The companies also began identifying potential connections between their activities and possibilities for new cooperation and business. Bringing different actors together can reveal opportunities that might otherwise remain unnoticed: a side stream from one company, for example, could potentially become a useful resource for another.

From identifying opportunities to matchmaking

The work will continue with a second workshop on 13 October. The next step will focus on practical matchmaking between the participating companies and identifying concrete possibilities for industrial symbioses.
