From storage room to a room for circularity: teilen & schrauben opens in Hamburg

On 22 August 2026, an former basement storage room at Goldbekhaus in Hamburg-Winterhude opened its doors with a new purpose. teilen & schrauben (“share & repair”) is a new space for the neighbourhood where circularity can be explored in practice – through repairing, sharing, making, learning and exchanging ideas. And above all, it is a space that will continue to evolve together with the neighbourhood.

The opening marked an important step for the Hamburg Circ@Home pilot. Over the past months, the event series Im Kreis gedacht has brought people together to explore different aspects of a circular society. With teilen & schrauben these ideas now have a physical home. Throughout the day, neighbours and visitors were invited to get hands-on: making buttons and postcards, producing homemade deodorant, turning old T-shirts into bags, screen printing, sewing a textile blanket and screening an entrance sign.

In the evening, author and maker Konrad Staisch presented his book Das, was da ist (“What Is Already There”) and shared thoughts and ideas about making, materials, waste, detours and simple solutions. The book asks what becomes possible when we start with what is already there instead of constantly producing something new.

A space that grows with the neighborhood

teilen & schrauben is deliberately not a finished space with a fixed programme. It is intended to grow through use, experimentation and the ideas of the people who take part. Future repair events, workshops and community activities will give households opportunities to learn practical skills, exchange knowledge and explore alternatives to linear consumption.

For Circ@Home, this makes the space particularly relevant. The project investigates how households, local services and municipalities can work together to make circular practices easier in everyday life. In Hamburg, teilen & schrauben provides a physical meeting and testing ground for these connections.

The Hamburg Circ@Home partners Goldbekhaus, Baltic Environmental Forum Germany (BEF) and UVM, together with the District of Hamburg-Nord, are collaborating on this local approach. Experiences from activities in and around the space will contribute to the wider Circ@Home work on neighbourhood circularity and help explore which approaches can be transferred to other places in the Baltic Sea Region.

From an unused storage room to a place for sharing skills, repairing things and trying out new ideas, teilen & schrauben shows what circularity can look like when it becomes part of neighbourhood life.
