European Sustainable Phosphorus Conference: Sustainable Phosphorus Management with a focus on the Mediterranean Context

ESPC5 brought together more than 200 researchers and stakeholders, and in total, more than 80 presentations were held.

Key Insights from the presentations:

• Phosphorus management has a critical priority, and there’s an urge to reuse it in an efficient and sustainable way
• The focus should stay on exploring circular economy as a whole and not just prioritizing phosphorus as an element
• Strategy for biofertilizer and digestate use should be improved
• Responsible way of using recycled nutrients needs to be shared
• We must avoid nutrient losses and therefore use more agroecological practices
• Farmers need to know how to use manure on the field to make it most efficient

Colleagues from RISE (Research Institutes of Sweden) Priscila de Morais Lima and Vaida Dzemedzionaite represented CiNURGi project with the poster “Advancing Nutrient Recycling for Sustainable Agriculture in Sweden and Beyond” where data of livestock manure, municipal waste, and industrial waste in Sweden was collected and summarized. Moreover, Priscila held a presentation about CiNURGi and explained the key activities, targeting groups, and goals within the project.

Other representatives from CiNURGi joined the conference as well, such as Joachim Clemens (SF-Soepenberg GmbH), Gereon Ploenes (SF-Soepenberg GmbH), and Edmundas Akstinas (Green Circle). It was a great opportunity to meet some of the partners from Germany and Lithuania to discuss the development of the project.

The conference was a great opportunity to get insights from research performed on recycled nutrients in different countries, to learn more about policy around it, and network about developments in nutrient recycling in Europe and the world.
