CiNURGi results presented at the Finnish Bioeconomy Days 2026

As one of Finland’s leading annual meeting places for the sector, it shares current information on industry developments, emerging solutions, and policy and market changes. This year’s themes included growth in the biogas sector and nutrient recycling through recycled fertilisers.

CiNURGi was represented through a presentation by Elina Tampio from Natural Resources Institute Finland (Luke), who introduced the project’s findings on the current status, potential and monitoring of nutrient recycling across the Baltic Sea Region and in Finland. The results highlighted the significant untapped potential of nutrient-rich biomasses and emphasized the need for reliable, comparable data to support decision-making and policy development.

The Bioeconomy Days brought together biogas plant representatives, companies working with nutrient recycling, public authorities and sector development organisations. As many of these stakeholders make decisions that directly influence nutrient recycling in practice, the event provided an important opportunity to present CiNURGi’s research findings to those who can apply them in their own activities. Discussions also showed strong interest in the project’s nutrient recycling indicators and regional data, which can help identify recycling opportunities and guide practical measures, policies and investments.

The discussions confirmed growing interest in nutrient recycling and its close connection to the future of the biogas sector. Several presentations emphasised that biogas plants are increasingly important not only for renewable energy production but also for recovering, refining and returning nutrients to agricultural use. Efficient nutrient use can reduce dependence on non-renewable raw materials, improve agricultural resource efficiency and lower nutrient loads to water bodies. CiNURGi provides an important knowledge base for this transition, making the Bioeconomy Days a valuable opportunity to share results, discuss their implications and build collaboration across the Baltic Sea Region.
