From spruce needles to next generation geroprotectors”
This presentation explores conifer needles as an untapped source of next-generation longevity ingredients. There is an ongoing shift in the supplement industry from generic “wellness” products to precision, evidence-based formulations targeting the biological hallmarks of ageing. Drawing on recent research, the talk explains how pine and fir terpenes can influence key mechanisms such as genomic stability, mitochondrial function, autophagy, inflammation control and cellular senescence. Case studies on fir needle extracts demonstrate antioxidant, DNA-protective and anti-inflammatory effects in cells and model systems, suggesting that the same compounds helping needles survive years of frost, heat and UV may also support human healthspan. Finally, the presentation outlines a multi-omics roadmap: from genomics and epigenetic clocks to metabolomics and microbiome analysis for rigorously testing conifer terpenes as potential geroprotective ingredients in future nutraceuticals and functional products.
