Pioneering Green Events Without Single-Use Plastics

Hosted in collaboration with the City of Helsinki, Coalition Clean Baltic, KuBuS e.V., and the Hamburg University of Applied Sciences, the workshop aimed to empower stakeholders in the Baltic Sea Region to transition toward sustainable practices. With a focus on organizing green events and promoting corporate responsibility, participants explored ways to eliminate single-use plastics from food and beverage services, public procurement, and festival planning.

The morning session set the tone with insightful presentations. Mikhail Durkin from Coalition Clean Baltic provided a comprehensive overview of policy and governance strategies to reduce plastic pollution. Federica Pastore emphasized the importance of awareness campaigns in driving behavioural change, while Heidrun Fammler introduced the concept of green events as a transformative approach to reducing plastic waste.

Highlights included real-world examples, such as Valmiera’s step-by-step journey to minimizing waste at festivals and Tallinn’s successful integration of plastic reduction into public procurement processes. KuBuS e.V. and ECAT showcased the innovative plastic inventory tool and methods for businesses to tackle single-use plastics and strategies to reduce their waste.

TalTech concluded the presentations with a powerful reminder of the cumulative impact of small actions, highlighting the environmental benefits and carbon dioxide reductions achievable through incremental measures implemented by cities, businesses, and individuals.

Hands-On Solutions and Engagement

The workshop’s interactive segment provided a unique opportunity for participants to engage directly with BALTIPLAST-developed approaches. An engaging escape game, Escape the Plastic Crisis, led by KuBuS e.V., challenged attendees to find creative solutions to plastic pollution in a simulated crisis scenario. This session emphasized the importance of collaboration, innovation, and immediate action.

A Platform for Future Collaboration

The event wrapped up with an engaging Q&A session, offering participants the opportunity to share their perspectives and discuss future initiatives. The event ended with networking over coffee to solidify partnerships and inspire new collaborations, reinforcing the workshop’s overarching goal: fostering a collective movement toward a plastic-free Baltic Sea Region.

Building a Sustainable Future Together

The Sustainable Synergy workshop exemplified the BALTIPLAST project’s mission to empower action against plastic pollution. By spotlighting innovative practices and creating a platform for collaboration, the event demonstrated how businesses and event organizers can lead the charge in reducing plastic use.

As we continue our journey toward a more sustainable future, BALTIPLAST invites all stakeholders to join us in making meaningful changes to protect our environment and the Baltic Sea.
