Lithuanian Companies Take Steps Toward Reducing Single-Use Plastics

28 August 2024
In a significant move toward sustainability, three Lithuanian companies—Kaunas Regional Development Agency, UAB “Nivela,” and the Kaunas Regional Waste Management Centre—have committed to reducing their single-use plastic consumption. This initiative comes as part of the BALTIPLAST project, where the companies conducted comprehensive plastic inventories across various sectors of their operations, from manufacturing and sales to administrative offices and sanitary facilities.
Technical details

Depending on the company’s size and purpose, the types and amounts of single-use plastics consumed varied. The results of these inventories revealed a substantial reliance on single-use plastic items, particularly in food packaging, disposable cups, and plastic bags. At both the Kaunas Regional Development Agency and the Kaunas Regional Waste Management Centre, employees gathered to review the findings and discuss ideas for reducing single-use plastic amounts. Proposed solutions included eliminating disposable cups, encouraging staff to bring reusable alternatives, and promoting the use of reusable containers for meals prepared at home.

UAB “Nivela,” a daytime lunch restaurant known for its takeout services, also participated in the plastic inventory. Director Aristida Šimaitienė shared that the assessment provided valuable insights into the areas where the most single-use plastics were being consumed, helping the company identify potential reduction strategies. Although financial constraints pose a challenge, Šimaitienė emphasized that UAB “Nivela” is committed to sustainability and has ambitious plans for the future. One such plan includes using reusable containers for supplying food to children’s camps.

These efforts mark another important step in Lithuania’s journey towards reducing plastic waste and promoting sustainability. By taking actionable steps today, these companies are setting a strong example for others to follow, contributing to a greener future for all.
