Baltic PlaNet Takes Off: Partners Unite in Estonia to Shape Climate-Resilient Coastal Future
09 October 2025
The Baltic PlaNet project officially launched with its inception meeting on October 1-2, 2025, bringing together partners from across the Baltic Sea Region to Laulasmaa and Paldiski, Estonia. The event marked the beginning of an ambitious journey to strengthen climate resilience in coastal municipalities through innovative spatial planning approaches.
Setting the Stage for Collaboration
Hosted by Lääne-Harju Municipality, the two-day gathering created the perfect environment for partners to connect, exchange ideas, and establish the foundation for three years of intensive cooperation. Representatives from eight partner organizations participated in strategic workshops designed to align efforts and plan concrete next steps.
The meeting opened with a welcome dinner, offering partners an informal opportunity to build relationships that will be crucial for the project’s success.
From Vision to Action
Day two brought the consortium to Paldiski, where intensive workshop sessions transformed the project’s strategic vision into actionable plans. Partners presented their capitalised projects—including Sea2Land, MSP-GREEN, LIFE LATESTadapt, SMART PLANNING, and others—exploring how these valuable outcomes will be integrated into the Baltic PlaNet platform.
The workshops focused on two critical areas: developing a clear integration strategy for capitalised project results and establishing detailed implementation timelines for the first project periods. The journey to the venue included a scenic stop at Kloogaranna beach, providing a firsthand glimpse of the coastal landscapes the project aims to protect.
Building Climate Resilience Together
Baltic PlaNet addresses a pressing challenge: helping Baltic Sea coastal municipalities adapt their spatial planning to increasingly frequent extreme weather events and climate change impacts. Through three interconnected work packages, the project will develop the Sea2Land Navigator platform, support municipalities in creating climate adaptation pathways, and build capacity across all governance levels.
The Estonia-Poland-Latvia pilot sites represented at the meeting—Lääne-Harju Municipality, Town of Międzyzdroje, and Kurzeme Planning Region—will serve as laboratories for testing innovative multi-level governance approaches and adaptation strategies.
Looking Ahead
As partners returned from Paldiski with clear action plans and renewed energy, the project is now positioned to deliver on its ambitious goals: equipping coastal planners with cutting-edge tools, fostering transnational knowledge exchange, and ultimately strengthening the resilience of Baltic Sea coastal communities against climate threats.
The inception meeting demonstrated that when diverse expertise meets shared commitment, transformative change becomes possible. Baltic PlaNet has officially begun its mission to make climate-smart coastal planning the new normal across the Baltic Sea Region.
